Sacramento Christian Writers is a non-denominational fellowship of Christian writers, novice and aspiring, experienced and professional, serving the Sacramento area since 1980.
The mission of Sacramento Christian Writers is to provide encouragement, training, and support for those desiring to share Biblical messages through writing.
"In the beginning was the word..."
We believe that all things came into being and are reconciled to God by that original word.
We believe we have been given the gift of writing for today in a clear and interesting style.
We believe our view of the world and our writing has been shaped by the Bible, our faith, our personal experience, and the breath of God residing within us.
We believe our words reflect this faith and communicate God's revelation in Jesus Christ, the living Word, and a means of reconciliation for the world.
We believe it is our calling to exercise our gift with written words to the glory of God. Although we write for a variety of markets, we believe we write in response to God's question, "Who shall I send?" We answer, "Here am I. Send me."

Over the past 30 years, writers have become members of Sacramento Christian Writers to learn to "Become a Better Writer." Some have gone on to be published authors. Others have enjoyed following their calling to write personal histories for their family. All genres are encouraged. Other members have been published and stayed to help develop new writers. All the members are at different stages with their writing. Some are not yet ready to start a writing project. All are welcome as listeners, writers, authors, and positive encouragers.
In 1980 Sacramento Christian Writers was established and met at the Sylvan Oaks Library. Some original and first few years members are still active in SCW today, they are Lila Fraizer, Arlet Vollers, Margaret Saylar, Mary Gillis, Clara Boyd, and Marge Marvin. They attend meetings and continue to have their writings published. In 1990, the original name of “Greater Sacramento Christian Writers Workshop” was shortened by dropping the first and last words.
The Newsletter developed in 1980, had been printed continuously until December 2004, when it was replaced with a website which spotlights; Member's Works in Progress, The President's Report, Members Web and Blog Sites, You Won't Want to Miss, and What You Missed. The core of the website is to announce meetings and list writing opportunities, contests, and upcoming writer's conferences.
SCW sponsors a Seminar every five years. The August 1980 speaker was Esther Hopping, Managing Editor of "Good News Review, International." It was a new Christian Newspaper published twice a week in the Sacramento area.
In 1985 the second Saturday Seminar featured reports on what the members learned at Mount Hermon Writers' Conference.
The third Seminar in 1990 was held at Capital Christian Center. The publishers sent so many sample magazines that it took two vehicles to get them to the Seminar.
The 1995 Seminar Speaker was Dr. Mark W. Lee, President Emeritus of Simpson College and author of more than a dozen books.
The 2000 Seminar speaker was Ethel Herr, best known as the author of "An Introduction to Christian Writing." The next year we studied her book, working through the twelve chapters, one each month.
In 2005, "Become a Better Writer" Seminar was celebrated in honor of the club's twenty-fifth anniversary. The all day event was located in the beautiful sanctuary of Ascension Lutheran Church. The teaching authors were; Ethel Herr, "The Writing Experience," Lee Roddy, "How to Write a Story," and Jon Drury, "Devotional Articles."
The 2010 celebration of the groups' 30th anniversary was a luncheon held in the fellowship hall of Ascension Lutheran Church. The speaker, Tim Stafford challenged the writers Why Write? Tim suggested three answers, Personal, Appeal, and God's example. Highlighted were thirty biographies and pictures of the groups’ members on the Wall of Writers.
